The minimum territorial units are regional (oblast) arable territories, which were determined using the Arable Land Map (Koroljeva et al., 2003), generalized to a scale of 1: 20 000 000.Projection:
Alber.s Equal Area Conic for RussiaBasic contents:
Map is a vector file consisting of polygons and points. Distribution of winter and spring varieties is represented by polygons; points represent areas with insignificant rape sowing.Accuracy of classifier:
Polygons are based on literature sources, political boundaries and ecological description, taking into account the arable territory for the Former Soviet Union. Point data were obtained from literature sources and herbarium specimens.Method of map production:
Historic agricultural statistics were reviewed at the level of agricultural region and the following literature was reviewed: State List of Selection Achievements (1996, 2003), Tulupnikov (1960). The Former Soviet Union had 16 regions. The boundaries from the map of arable lands (1:4000000) were used for the base map area and to further refine crop distribution (Koroljeva et al, 2003). The area of spring-sown and green manure-types covers almost the entire arable territory of FSU. Winter-sown types are cultivated in the south-west regions, where the winter period is short, snowy and without abrupt fluctuation of temperatures (Korenev, 1990). Consultation for production of the map was provided by VIR specialist A.G. Dubovskaya.Reference citations:
