Phoma oryzae Cooke - Phoma Disease of Rice.

Systematic position.

Division Eumycota, subdivision Deuteromycotina, class Coelomycetes, order Sphaeropsidales, family Sphaerioidaceae, genus Phoma.

Biological group.

Hemibiotrophic parasites.

Morphology and biology.

Attacks species of Poaceae. Stems, leaves, sheathes, and glumes are damaged. Appears during ripening. Spots light green to black, covered with pycnidia. Leaves become rigid, twist along central rib. Pycnidia spherical, to 80-100 . in diameter. Spores colorless, oval or ovoid, 2 x 3 .. Winters on vegetation residues.

Ecology.

Not investigated.

Distribution.

Everywhere in zones of cultivation of rice.

Economic significance.

Not studied yet. Protective action is eradication of residues.
