Vector map consisting of 2 layers. Area and zone of pest damage are shown by polygons.Accuracy of the classifier:
The populated area is indicated for this species according to the published data. The low pest damage zone is identified in the territory where the Northern Mole Vole density in perennial grasses, pastures, and hayfields is systematically higher than 5% threshold of economic pest damage; i.e., 6-7 complex burrows (20-30 individuals) per hectare. However, high population densities, which were characteristic of this species in 1960-70s (Slastenina, 1963; Rakov, 1955), are no longer reached due to the permanent human factor (plowing, irrigated agriculture, and intense use of pastures).Method of map production:
The species area maps taken from the publications of Bobrinskii et al. (1965), Flint et al. (1970), Pavlinov et al. (2002) have been used as the starting material. The distribution area of the Northern Mole Vole covers southeastern Ukraine, Ciscaucasia, Volga region, the South of Western Siberia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Different species, the Southern Mole Vole Ellobius fuscocapillus Blyth, inhabits Tajikistan (Davydov, 1988). More precise definition of the Northern Mole Vole distribution was carried out according to the point map of Sludskii (1978) for Kazakhstan; using the map from the publication of Evdokimov (2001) for Southern Urals and Trans-Ural region; and for the Volga-Kama territory according to Popov.s (1960) mention that the Northern Mole Vole occurs in only southeastern part of Tatarstan. In Turkmenistan, the distribution area of the Northern Mole Vole coincides with the Southern Mole Vole area (Yakimenko, Mapochkina, 2007). The Northern Mole Vole area is mosaic everywhere, and in some regions of Ciscaucasia (Krasnodar and Stavropol. Territories) its distribution is sporadic as a consequence of strong anthropogenic influence caused by continuous plowing of the habitats suitable for the species subsistence. This species has practically vanished from many places of Ukraine (Kondratenko et al., 2007), presently in Crimea (Tovpinets, 1993), and Luhansk Region for certain (Sakhno, 1971; 1978). The northern border is drawn according to Pavlinov et al. (2002), Gromov, Erbaeva (1995), but with correction in Novosibirsk Region using a regional information source (Shvetsov, 2007); here all administrative areas of species present occurrence are listed. In Ciscaucasia, the southern border is drawn basically according to Pavlinov et al. (2002), who has satisfactorily shown the area reduction in this region. The low pest damage zone is indicated in the limits of Southern Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan only. The zone boundaries are determined by data contained in the publications of Kuznetsov (1948), Rakov (1955) and Slastenina (1963). In the rest of its area, this species has lost the significance of being a serious pest of agricultural lands; its control has not been put into practice since 1970s (Polyakov, 1968).Reference citations:
