Accuracy of classifier:

Within the species distribution area, we specified a zone of high harm (Southern Ukraine & Northern Caucasus) where climatic conditions are favorable to pest development (rather areas with warm soil and moderate amounts of precipitation). Even in areas where crops are treated with pesticides, the aphid population may propagate, reaching 20-30% threshold of plant infestation (Anonymousous, 1984). We also distinguished the zone of moderate harm, where climatic conditions are usually less favorable to pest development (Northern Ukraine, central Russia, Transcaucasia, Southeastern Kazakhstan) and where 20-30% of beet crops are infested. Southern Altai and Georgia, where the pest rarely harms crops, were classified as the zone of low harm.

Mapping procedure:

The distribution area of P. fuscicornis was mapped using published materials (Anonymousous, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1969; Zhitkevich, 1966; Gaponova, 1970; Kryzhanovskii, Dantsig, 1972; Kosmachevskii, Golikov, 1976; Mamontova, 1975, 1976; Ermolenko, 1984; Albrecht et al., 1996; Camprag, 2003, etc.). Zones of harm were differentiated using the publications listed below. The distribution area was adjusted in accordance with the Atlas of Vegetation (Barysheva et al., 1992), while the zones of harm were reduced to match industrial sugar beet plantings within the former USSR.
