Perennial plant. The plants are dense and caespitose. Stalks are 30-80 cm tall, 1-2 mm thick, straight, or, at the base, slightly curved. Sheathes glabrous; leaves are 3-10 mm wide and 7-15 cm long, flat, bare, but more or less rough. Spikes are 5-12 cm long, bilateral, frequently with bottom spikelets and rather thin axis. Spikelets (9)10-13(15) cm long, with 2-4 (5) flowers. Spikelet scales are 6-8 mm long, with 3-5 veins, lanceolate, sharp, and 1.5-2 times shorter then adjacent bottom floral scales, pubescent on the inside, with rough veins on the outside. The axis of spikelet is densely pubescent. Bottom floral scales are 8-11 mm long, with 5 veins, bare, subulately pointed, without awns, less often with awns 1-1.5 mm long. Plant blossoms in June-August. Anemophilous. 2n=28.Distribution.
Occurs throughout Scandinavia, the Northern European region of the former USSR, and Western and Eastern Siberia.Ecology.
Plant grows along meadow slopes, in valley meadows, along wood edges, along roadsides and in sandy soils.Use and economic value.
