Perennial, tussock-forming, warm gray-green, hard grass. Height reaches 5-40 (60) cm. Leaf is 0.5-2 mm in width, short, hard. Lingula is 0.5-2 mm in length. Inflorescence is a panicle with few spikelets. It is sprawling with sharp, rough branches, which are direct upward, sometimes compact. Spikelet is 3-8 mm in length. Axis is bare or pubescent. Lower floral glume has short pubescence on carina and along (sometimes between) veins. Long, winding hairs are well-developed on the callus. Cross-pollinated and wind-pollinated. Flowering and ripening occur in July-August. Seed and vegetative reproduction. Chromosomal number 2n=42, 48-50, 56, 63, 78.Distribution.
Occurs in the European part of the former USSR (Kolsky Peninsula, Urals (north, middle), basin of the River Pechora), Caucasia (Dagestan, Eastern and Central Caucasus), Western Siberia (southern Altai), Eastern Siberia, the Far East, Middle Asia (Tarabagatai, Dzhungarskii Alatau, Northern and Central Tien Shan), Scandinavia, Central Europe, and North America.Ecology.
Species occurs in stony, sandy (rare) tundra, on stone slopes, among rocks, on mounds, and in the alpine tundra belt of the Arctic.Economic value.
